Irwin "RED" Frederick Hutchins

Red was born on Nov. 27, 1915,
died October 26, 1995 at the age of 79
Obituary,
the son
of Elmer C. and Bertha ROWE Hutchins
in Fennville, MI where he lived his whole
life. He was raised in a house behind the
old high school,where the library is now
and where he graduated from.

He had 2 sisters, Helen ASH and
Dorothy BALE and 2 brothers, Kieth R.
and Lawrence "IKE".

After serving in the Army and WWII
he returned home where he started work
with Consumers Power Company,
driving the big line truck. He later became store-
keeper at Consumers Fennville garage.

During this time he met and married
Lois Marie SHECKLER, BOUWMAN

Red joined the Masons about the same time
he married Lois.

They both later joined the Order of Easter Stars

Red and Lois were married on the 19th day of April, 1946
at the home of Lois's parents on Hutchins Lake
in the presents of Lois's children LaVerne, Carolyn, and Arleen.

.. ....They moved into their 1st Fennville home, the large house on the SW corner 1st St. and Maple St. Arleen and LaVerne moved in with them very shortly after. A couple nights after we moved in there was a loud drumming noise where a bunch of relatives gave Red and Lois a shivary, to initiate their marriage.

Some time later we moved to a 2nd house on Walter St...2 houses west of Consumers. This is where Carolyn.joined the family to make it complete, she had been living with Frank and Edith Lickley for several years.
..
Although Red never adopted Lois's children,
together they provided a very good home which was always happy. There was to be a 3rd house to live in while we kids went to high school. Boy was that handy, right behind the school, only a half block to run to school when we heard the bell ring.

Hutchins in Fennville Area In the History of Fennville, just as the town was incorporated in 1882, W.W. Hutchins operated the 1st general repair shop and Ira Hutchins built and operated the 1st electric power plant. In 1895, H.H. Hutchins was elected secretary-treasure of the 1st telephone company in the area and believed to be the 1st Co-Op in the country. In1842, David Hutchins owned a log house near Ganges where school was held. Harrison Hutchins, his bride was Laura C. Hudson, teacher for the 1st school in the Fennville district, had a home in Peach Belt around 1844. Miss Hudson was a direct descendant from Henry Hudson, the navigator who discovered the Hudson river in 1609. Also see New Richmond History.
